StartUp Spotlight: Joanne Smith on Independence through Business Ownership

Intro to Joanne

Joanne set up Wordsmith in 2021, to provide affordable, professional bidding and grant funding services to SMEs and third sector organisations, with a focus on delivery of high-quality services, transforming business proposals into captivating narratives that engage and persuade target audiences. As a result of her exceptionally high-quality submissions for both bids and grant applications, she now works with The NextGen to support startups in securing the funding they need.

What made you start Wordsmith Ltd?

Joanne: “After years of enduring difficult work environments and challenging bosses, I realised it was time to take control of my own destiny. I wanted to create a business where I could work on my own terms and build something meaningful.”

Why did you choose entrepreneurship over an employed role?

Joanne: “The freedom and flexibility that entrepreneurship offers were incredibly appealing to me. It allowed me to shape my career path according to my own values and vision.”

What's been your biggest challenge on your entrepreneurial journey and how did you overcome it?

Joanne: “The biggest challenge has been acquiring the diverse skills needed to run a business successfully. Learning to wear multiple hats—whether it’s managing finances, sales and marketing, or operations—was overwhelming at first. I overcame this by dedicating time to continuous learning and seeking advice from experts in different areas.”

What have you achieved that you are most proud of?

Joanne: “I'm incredibly proud to have built a thriving business that’s now approaching its third year. I’ve developed a loyal client base who I have delivered some significant bid wins for, and the business is in a healthy financial position with strong cash flow and turnover.”

What personal attributes do you think have contributed to your success as a business owner?

Joanne: “Resilience and determination have been key. Staying committed, even on those tough days when quitting or going back to being employed seemed easier, has been crucial to my success.”

What's the biggest lesson you have learnt on this journey?

Joanne: “I've learned that not everyone conducts business with the same level of honesty and integrity that I do. It's important to be vigilant because there are some less scrupulous individuals out there.”

How do you create work life balance?

Joanne: “I achieve balance by carefully planning my workflow, prioritising deadlines, and keeping in mind what truly matters in life. This approach helps me maintain a healthy separation between work and personal time.”

Who has inspired you the most?

Joanne: “Every single woman who quit her job and set up on her own and is smashing it!!”

Is there anyone whose help and support has been critical to you as a business owner?

Joanne: “My accountant has been invaluable, teaching me the ins and outs of the financial side of running a business. My business coach has also been a critical support system, offering guidance and a sounding board for my ideas.”

If you could give 3 pieces of advice to someone just starting up in business, what would they be?

Joanne:

·  “Don’t give up; success takes time, and perseverance is key.

·  Build a network of peers around you who can offer support and advice.

·  Work hard, delight your clients, but also embrace the freedom and flexibility that entrepreneurship brings.”
